St. Louis DWI Mitigating Costs and the Role of an Attorney

Interviewer: How can an attorney help me save on my DUI costs?

Kevin Roach: A St. Louis DWI attorney can help you in a number of ways. One of the things I like to do is, first and foremost, I like to keep my client’s record as clean as possible. Sometimes that entails paying a little higher cost. I'll be honest. Sometimes it's better to pay a little more of a fine in order to have something on your record, but as far as keeping the cost down, the biggest cost you can have is a criminal conviction. People don't always see that. They see that they’re going to have to pay two or three or four or five hundred dollars here. Really, you've got to look at the big picture. “What's a DWI on my record going to cost me for the rest of my life? How many jobs is it going to cost me? Is it going to cost me a promotion? Is it going to affect my livelihood?” I try to point out to people the big picture and not just the short-term. I try to emphasis that.

A St. Louis DWI Attorney Can Convince Prosecutors to Reduce Fines Substantially

Every case is different. Sometimes, to answer your question, the prosecutor might be asking for a four or five hundred fine, and you can convince them to cut it in half or to reduce it down substantially to save your client money. I know times are tough, so I try to keep the costs down as much as possible. As far as my legal fees go, I also like to work with people on my fees as well. I try to be flexible with my attorney's fees. I do payment plans whenever I can. Those are just a few examples of the ways I try to keep the cost down.

When Retaining a St. Louis or St. Charles Attorney to Defend DWI Charges, You Get What you Pay for

Interviewer: As far as attorney's fees go, sometimes I see attorney billboards that have what seems to be a really affordable deal when it comes to DUIs. Does someone get what they pay for?

Kevin Roach: Yes, that is one of the truest statements anybody can ever say. You absolutely get what you pay for. A lot of people call my office on a regular basis. A lot of them are price shopping because they may get letters from other attorneys quoting low fees or whatnot. People just need to understand that a lot of times you need to compare apples to apples. You need to look at someone's experience. If you are getting some low ball fee from somebody that sends you a letter in the mail, it might be some kid right out of law school working with his home office in his basement and who doesn't have any experience. Of course they are going to be cheaper. They are just trying to get their feet wet. Do you really want your livelihood on the line with someone that doesn't have the skillset to properly take care of your case? People don't always factor in everything. They are just looking at the bottom line. An experienced attorney that handles a lot of criminal and DWI defense can typically get a much better outcome than someone that doesn't have the same experience. That is something I try to explain to people. I try to be reasonable with my attorney's fees. I am not the cheapest attorney in town – that’s for sure – but I am not the most expensive either. I understand that people have a budget and I try to work with everybody whenever I can.

You Can’t Put a Price on Hiring an Experienced St. Louis DUI Attorney

This is just something that I think is important to repeat. You really can't put a price on hiring an experienced DUI attorney. Attorneys aren't cheap. People know that. Nobody wants to pay thousands of dollars for their attorney, but when looking at the big picture and the long-term effects of a DUI, an experienced DUI attorney can get the charges amended or sometimes dismissed, which can save you thousands and thousands of dollars and headaches over the years. Not to mention there’s the social stigma of your employer seeing it. That is one of the most important things that I can't emphasize enough. People need to retain an attorney when they are facing something like this. If they can afford to retain an attorney, it is money well spent. It is going to pay for itself in spades. Most people realize that, but not everybody.
